Samsung Techwin installed one of its cogeneration systems in Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, the first among Korean hospitals to adopt such an energy saving measure using gas turbine.
This cogeneration project is known as a first step of Samsung¡¯s new growth engine.
On June 25, the opening ceremony for the 3MW gas-turbine cogeneration system was held at Samsung Medical Center with Oh Chang-suk, executive vice president of Samsung Techwin, Gwon Gi-chang, director of Samsung Seoul Hospital, and other guests from relevant fields in attendance.

Gas turbine cogeneration systems generate electricity and heat to improve the way of energy consumption. The gas turbine generates electricity, while the heat recovered during this process is used to produce steam and hot water.
Steam is used to heating and cooling, and can be converted into other energy forms in an all-in-one system.
Some hospitals have already installed gas engine cogeneration systems, but they were used only for producing hot water rather than steam. Steam is required more in hospitals as a rule.
If hospitals are unable to produce the necessary steam from cogeneration system, they cannot reduce energy costs enough and are less efficient during the summer.
Go Hun-jin, the manager of the power system department at Samsung Techwin, said, ¡°A gas turbine cogeneration system can reduce annual energy costs by as much as 10%. (Samsung Medical Center in Seoul spends KRW 10 billion of energy cost a year). It offers high efficiency because it can provide cooling energy during summer as well as heating in winter.¡±
With the installation of the system in Samsung Medical Center, Samsung Techwin is expecting more penetration into the hospital market. To complete installation process by the end of this year, Samsung Techwin is installing a 4.5MW gas-turbine cogeneration system in Catholic Medical Center in Gangnam, Seoul and discussing similar projects with other large hospitals.
Ko said, ¡°The installation of such a system in Samsung Medical Center will create a breakthrough in the Korean energy market, which has hitherto been reliant on foreign technology. Based on the technology accumulated by providing gas turbine engines for fighters for over 30 years, Samsung Techwin will increase its market share of the cogeneration market.¡±
Since the initial investment can be recovered seven years after the installation of the cogeneration system, its economics is quite good. The cogeneration market is expected to grow to a value of several trillion won within some years.
As well as the large system market for 5~50MW generators, Samsung Techwin will enter the small system market using 85kW generators. In addition to this, Samsung Techwin is planning to enter the CES (Community Energy System) business as a system provider.
